DISCONNECT

Relationships are a back and forth of both your admiration for a person and the distance between you. There have been times in my life that I’ve felt like a revolving door; people coming into my world, only to leave. This has been true in friendship, family, and love.

This body of work is demonstrative of environmental portraiture in relation to my friendships. I take the photos to illustrate how I see my friends when we are together. I capture each of my friends in the spaces that I most associate them with. I use my lens to give perspective to the way I perceive each friendship. With a range of emotions tying me to each person, my images highlight the admiration, naturalness, and distance unique within each relationship.

Through compositing, I digitally integrate my transparent self into photos of my friends to further illustrate the haunting disconnection that many of us have felt in our lives. My work visually creates a tangible depiction of the distance and anxiety that can occur in relationships, creating a narrative based on the unequal admiration that lies between one another. This body of work serves to highlight the knowledge that my relationships are not perfect; they are ever-changing, eventually leading to their departure from my life.

“DISCONNECT” is meant to evoke the feelings of anxiety and inadequacy within relationships and explore the experiences behind them.
